Barton County Community College Center for Adult Education is located upstairs in the Great Bend Workforce Center at 1025 Main. A wide variety of services are provided to the community. Hours: 8 - 12 Monday through Friday Phone number: 620-793-5794 ABE (Adult Basic Education) Barton's Adult Basic Education Program helps students improve their basic math, reading and communications skills. Many who enroll in the ABE program go on to earn their Kansas State High School diploma. Orientation requires a three (3) day attendance. General information and diagnostic testing are given on Monday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Individual student interviews with instructors are scheduled on Wednesday or Thursday of the orientation week. Refresher Courses Basic reading, math, and keyboarding skills are available for people who have a high school diploma, but who need to refresh these skills for further education or job advancement. Students learn vocabulary, reading, listening, and writing focused on life and work skills. Basic computer technology is also offered with these classes.
Orientation takes place the second (2nd) week of September and the second (2nd) week of January at the beginning of each session. Citizenship Preparation The Center for Adult Education can help a student to prepare to become a United States citizen by providing classes in citizenship test preparation. GED - General Educational Development General Educational Development (GED) tests give students the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma. This credential is recognized as a key to employment opportunities, advancement, further education and financial rewards. The battery of five (5) tests cover basic academic areas of study. Anyone without a high school degree and not currently enrolled in high school is eligible to take the GED test. A Kansas ID or proof of Kansas residency with identification that proves the candidate’s identity must be provided. Center for Adult Education provides preparation classes, practice testing and scheduling for the GED. Official Practice Tests (OPT) must be passed before scheduling the GED tests.
