Definitions

eCollege – online delivery system which powers BartOnline/EduKan  eCourses and eCompanion / Hybrid shells.

BartOnline – The delivery system also known as a CMS - Course Management System contains three nodes:  eCourse, eCompanion and hybrid.

eCourse = 100% online class, no requirement for Face to Face seat time, must use eCollege, tuition is $130 credit hour.  Athletes are restricted from taking eCourses when an on-campus offering of that course is available.

EduKan - A consortium of six community colleges in Central and Western Kansas offering 100% online eCourses only. The home office for EduKan is housed on the Barton campus. Students must enroll themselves online and indicate the school through which they want their course credit to go, as well as order their books online. A student must drop a class through EduKan, not their advisor or Enrollment Services.

Face to Face (F2F) – 100% on campus (on ground) classroom time. Course must meet seat time rules of 12.5 clock hours per credit hour. Students must enroll with an adviser or Enrollment Services. Books are purchased through the bookstore on campus.

eCompanion or Hybrid - delivered on campus through a lecture or seminar format and is supplemented by online components(shells) delivered through the BartOnline System, and where the student receives academic credit. Because of the classroom component of these courses, a student must be enrolled either at main campus or at Fort Riley to participate. Students are automatically enrolled in the online component (shell) which may accompany the course they are taking. Not all instructors have these particular components with their course.

eCompanion - An eCompanion course shell is not a full online course or a hybrid course; the class meets Face to Face , 100% of its scheduled time, on a campus.  eCompanion is used as an online supplement to enhance, not replace, classroom experiences.  Faculty can craft the use of eCompanion supplements in any manner that enhances their classroom/course delivery.  The idea is to improve instruction and administration. There is no extra cost or fee for courses with an online eCompanion shell. They are the same price as an on campus class.

Hybrid – No more than 50% of the course is taught online, the balance is done in the Face to Face classroom time. Hybrid split is a minimum of ½ of the published seat time rules. Most hybrid classes are 50/50, but they can be 80/20, 75/25 etc. with the first number being the percent of time in a classroom “seat”. Books are purchased through the bookstore on campus.

General Information
Students who take eCourses need to be aware of session dates and financial aid issues. While eCourses allow some flexibility in completing coursework, students are expected to log in frequently. Students may need to possess elevated self-discipline to be successful in online courses due to no seat time requirement. Common issues which arise are:

1. Inconsistent or poor access to Internet,

2. Lack of or poor computer skills,

3. Apprehension about using the computer,

 4. Outdated or obsolete computer equipment

At this time, only Full-Time faculty are required to use the online
eCompanion shell component with their Face to Face courses. There are Associate faculty who elected to use this tool with their courses but it is not required of them.
